Match Report: St Peter’s Lurgan v Dromintee – U14 Division 1 Cup. Final Score: Dromintee 4-11 | St Peter’s Lurgan 3-07 Venue: St Peter’s Lurgan
Dromintee’s U14s delivered a battling and skillful performance to claim an impressive 4-11 to 3-07 win away to St Peter’s Lurgan in what was a high-energy and competitive encounter.
The game began with the home side starting fast, putting 1-02 on the board in the opening five minutes as Dromintee were slow out of the blocks. But the visitors kept their heads, settled into the game, and gradually gained control. They soon drew level through a mix of hard work and sharp finishing, and from there, they pushed on to take command.
Once again, Paraic McGennity was central to Dromintee’s attacking threat, delivering a superb individual performance and finishing with 1-06 to his name. His movement and accuracy kept the St Peter’s defence under constant pressure.
Around him, there was no shortage of support in attack — Miceál O’Hanlon put in another hardworking shift, constantly battling for possession and linking play well. He was ably assisted by Fionnán O’Rourke, Daithí Carnegie, and the pacey Aurimas Jankus, who all contributed to a dynamic and dangerous forward line.
Junior Winters put in a tireless display at half forward, linking defence and attack with clever runs and dogged tracking back. His work rate set the tone for the team throughout the match.
In defence, Andrew McNally was rock solid at half back, reading the game well and driving the team forward from deep. Meanwhile, Charlie Jennings and Dáibhí Carr were given the tough task of picking up two of St Peter’s key players — and both lads rose to the occasion, putting in excellent performances that stifled the home side’s attacking threat whilst providing an attacking outlet themselves.
There was another excellent showing at half back from Luke McBennett, who continues to defy his age with his maturity and footballing intelligence despite still being U12. The same can be said for Feidhlim McKeever, who stood strong in the corner back position.
The defensive unit stood firm throughout, with Shane Dunne, Jude Garvey, and Finn Coburn all putting in solid performances under pressure. Behind them, Pearse Conlon delivered another composed display between the posts, dealing calmly with high balls and distributing well.
It was great to see Caolán O’Rourke, our captain on the night, return to play after suffering a nasty rib injury just a couple of weeks ago. Coming on in the second half, Caolan slotted back into play with his usual determination.
It was a full team effort from Dromintee including the lads on the bench — every player gave their all, fought for each other, and showed the resilience and teamwork needed to grind out a big result away from home against a very good St Peter’s side.
The lads now play Silverbridge at home on 12 August at 7.15pm.
