Dromintee U12 just miss out in Monaghan Harps Tournament.
Dromintee U12 attended the Monaghan Harps Tournament on Saturday held in memory of Brendan Og Duffy who tragically lost his life in a car accident in 2021.
The format was 9 a side and each club was invited to bring one team.
24 clubs attended the tournament and there was a wide spread of teams from across nine counties and three provinces.
Dromintee found themselves in a tough group but progressed undefeated after hard fought wins over Truagh (Monaghan), Newtownbutler (Fermanagh) and Sean McDiarmada (Monaghan).
Defensively, Dromintee were solid throughout, disciplined tackling and aggression to the ball being the order of the day and conceding a total of 1 point in the group stages was a feat in itself.
That set up an Armagh derby in the quarter final against Madden. Madden are a quality team having eliminated Dromintee in a previous tournament earlier in the year.
However Dromintee started strong and once they got on top never looked back and ran out winners 7 - 3.
Next up was a semi final against Clontibert. Despite a slow start, Dromintee largely dominated the game but this wasn't reflected where it matters most - on the scoreboard. Dromintee did manage to edge themselves in front but Clontibert hung in and a last minute free took the game to extra time.
Dromintee just couldn't get going after the restart and Clontibert edged them in extra time by a point.
They say you learn more from your defeats, and this team will continue to learn and improve, but in truth the players will feel like they left this one behind as they were clearly the best team on display today and played some outstanding football.
The fact that Truagh, who Dromintee comfortably defeated in the group stages, would go on to win the final was an especially hard pill to swallow.
However, as always the boys represented the club with pride and distinction, and the fact they are reaching the latter end of the cup competition in every tournament they enter reflects the hard work being done on the ground. If they can continue to work hard there is a bright future ahead for them and the wins will come.
We would like to thank Dick Clerkin and all at Monaghan Harps for the invite and congratulate them on an excellent well run tournament.
